Merriam-Webster defines philanthropy as “goodwill to fellow members of the human race; especially: active effort to promote human welfare.”
The Sarasota community came together to stretch this definition to new heights, taking philanthropic action for the benefit of hundreds of important causes for 24 hours on May 1 and 2 as part of the 2018 Giving Challenge.
People who care about causes in our community made online donations, helping their favorite nonprofit organizations receive special matching dollars and grant incentives through a variety of prizes. Nonprofit organizations planned creative campaigns and shared stories about their mission with passion and pride as part of the Giving Challenge which invited each of us to #BeTheOne. Many members of the Allegiant Private Advisors team supported the effort through volunteerism and leadership roles on boards and committees where we were active participants in the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns.
We proudly dedicated our own time, talents and treasures with each member of the Allegiant Private Advisors team selecting charitable organizations to support. (A difficult task since more than 625 nonprofits serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties participated in this year’s Giving Challenge.)
As part of the 2018 Giving Challenge, the Allegiant team designated over $10,000 in contributions to the following causes:
All Faiths Food Bank
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast
Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County
Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice
Children’s Guardian Fund
Everyday Blessings, Inc.
Gentle Souls Horse Sanctuary
Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida
Habitat for Humanity Sarasota
Humane Society of Sarasota County
Just for Girls
Library Foundation for Sarasota County
Lost Pet Services
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
More Too Life
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida
Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center
Sarasota Family YMCA

Special Olympics Florida – Manatee County

In total, the 2018 giving event raised $11.7 million for local nonprofits in 24 hours—an impressive community-wide act of philanthropy we were privileged to support as individuals and professionals.
The Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation, as well as support from Manatee Community Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and the Herald-Tribune Media Group. The participating nonprofits have shown a commitment to transparency by having profiles in The Giving Partner.
We invite you to visit www.TheGivingPartner.org to learn more about each nonprofit’s programmatic impact, leadership, planning, financials and needs, and speak with an Advisor to discuss your family’s charitable giving.
