Research Assistant Cameron Dees joined the Allegiant Private Advisors team in early 2018 and the past year has flown by, with Cameron often behind the desk at our Bloomberg terminal. We invite our clients and colleagues to get to know Cameron better as he shares his personal story:
My path to Allegiant was made possible by a heavy dose of luck and a smaller dose of making sure I was prepared when the right opportunity came along. In late 2017, after almost a year of banking experience under my belt, I was constantly thinking about how the banking environment was not the right fit for me, and how I was not even applying what I had worked so hard to learn. So in late December of 2017, I began actively searching for other positions in the Tampa Bay area. After several weeks I was discouraged with the job search and wondering if I would find the right fit, or if I would be stuck in an uninspiring career. I was almost ready to hang up the search when I received an email from a HR representative at Kerkering Barberio asking me if I was interested in applying for a role at Allegiant. Scanning over the job description, I could not believe what I was seeing: a role in Sarasota that included security analysis and hands-on portfolio management tasks as well as interacting with clients. I was sold before I ever stepped foot in the office. Once I did make it into the office for my first interview, my early excitement was confirmed. The staff was so nice and welcoming, the opposite environment that I was expecting to see at a such a reputable investment firm. After a few more interviews, and news that I had passed the first level of an important designation, the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA), the team at Allegiant agreed that I would be a good fit and offered me a position as Analyst on the Investment and Research team.
I am a 4thgeneration Floridian, growing up in Temple Terrace, a small town in Hillsborough County. Contrary to the personal stories of other Allegiant team members, investment management was not a common subject in my house growing up. Instead I was focused on my school work and the numerous sports I was involved in. Like many elementary school aged boys, I fell in love with football from watching televised games, and from that point on football became my dream. Through high school I was consumed with getting good grades and bettering myself as a football player. My hard work paid off in my Junior year of high school as several division 1 schools extended scholarship offers to me, and after much internal debate I decided to attend Marshall University in West Virginia. My career had a pretty hot start at Marshall and it seemed that my dreams may actually not be that far away. However, injuries and a few surgeries later I found myself out of the game and my childhood dreams crushed. Just when I felt down on my luck however, the best thing that ever happened to me came along - meeting my wife Lauryn. Lauryn and I dated for a few years, and then I took her off the market for good. (I definitely out-kicked my coverage with her!) We got married, I finished my undergraduate degree in finance and went to graduate school at Marshall to obtain my MBA. Once I graduated in late 2016, my wife and I moved to Tampa in pursuit of our dreams and warmer weather.
A few months after I began working at Allegiant, Lauryn and I moved to Lakewood Ranch and we could not be happier. We have two huskies that consume a good bit of our time, along with golf, hunting, and fishing. Lauryn is now a NICU nurse at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and is going back to school in June to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I am currently studying for Level II of the CFA. Needless to say, we do not have an abundance of downtime.
Almost a year after starting with Allegiant, I know that I absolutely made the right choice and will be here as long as they will have me. I firmly believe that Allegiant is destined for big things and I cannot wait to see how things play out for this amazing organization as we work diligently and passionately in the best interests of our client families.
